Comparison

UAE corporate bank accounts compared

Twelve banks, what each is actually like to deal with, and why applications fail. Opening an account takes two to six weeks from a complete file — and the file, not the bank, is usually what decides it.

Before the table

Choosing the bank is the second decision.

The first is whether your file can be approved anywhere. Somewhere inside every bank, a compliance officer has to record why this company is being onboarded and what its money is expected to do. If they can write that sentence, the account opens. If they cannot, no amount of choosing the right bank helps.

Banks do differ, though, and matching the business to the institution saves weeks. A trade finance business at a digital bank will be disappointed. A two-person consultancy approaching HSBC cold will be declined on size rather than on risk, and will not be told which.

We do not receive commission from any bank listed here, and we do not guarantee an account with any of them. The decision belongs to the bank's compliance function and is not for sale.

The banks

BankBest suited toWhat it is like
Emirates NBDDomestic — largestEstablished businesses with real UAE substanceThe default corporate bank for Dubai companies and the one most free zones are used to dealing with. Onboarding is thorough rather than fast, and the compliance function asks proper questions. A strong relationship here opens doors with landlords and suppliers.
First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB)Domestic — largest by assetsLarger corporates, Abu Dhabi and government-adjacent businessThe bank of choice if your counterparties are government or semi-government in Abu Dhabi. Less interested in small free zone companies than in mid-market and up, and the process reflects that.
MashreqDomesticSMEs and trade financeHistorically among the more accessible major banks for genuine SMEs, with a digital SME proposition (NeoBiz) aimed squarely at newly formed companies. Trade finance capability is real.
RAKBANKDomesticSmall businesses and northern-emirates companiesLongstanding reputation as one of the more pragmatic banks for small companies, including those licensed outside Dubai. Often the answer when a bigger bank has said no for reasons of size rather than risk.
ADCBDomesticMid-market, Abu Dhabi presenceSolid corporate offering, stronger in Abu Dhabi than Dubai. Reasonable with structured trading businesses that can document their flows properly.
Commercial Bank of DubaiDomesticDubai SMEs and trading companiesComfortable with Dubai trading businesses and mid-sized companies. A frequent second choice when the largest banks decline on size.
Wio BankDigitalStartups, freelancers, digital-first businessesAbu Dhabi-based digital bank built for SMEs and sole traders. Onboarding is genuinely faster and the account works well for a business whose flows are card and transfer rather than trade finance.
Zand BankDigitalTechnology and digital-asset-adjacent businessesDigital-first UAE bank that has been more willing than most to look at businesses in newer sectors. Still applies real diligence — the difference is willingness to have the conversation.
Emirates Islamic / Dubai Islamic BankIslamicBusinesses wanting Sharia-compliant bankingFull corporate offerings on Islamic principles. Structurally different products rather than merely re-labelled ones, which matters if you use financing.
HSBCInternationalGroups with an existing international relationshipExcellent if your group already banks with HSBC elsewhere — the introduction travels. Difficult to approach cold as a newly formed UAE company without meaningful balances.
Standard CharteredInternationalTrade corridors into Asia and AfricaStrong where your trade flows run along corridors it knows. Like HSBC, more accessible via an existing group relationship than from a standing start.
National Bank of FujairahDomestic — specialistShipping, bunkering and commodity tradeGenuine specialism in the east-coast maritime and fuel trade. If that is your business, a bank that understands it is worth more than a bigger name that does not.

Positioning only. We do not publish minimum balances, fees or turnaround times — those vary by segment and relationship and change constantly. Confirm current terms with the bank.

The file

What actually gets read.

Licensed activity
Compared against your projected invoices. A consultancy licence and product-sales revenue is the most common mismatch.
Source of wealth
How the shareholders came by their capital, with evidence. "Savings" is not an answer; a share sale agreement or property disposal is.
Expected turnover and counterparties
Where the money will come from, in which currencies, from which countries.
Substance
Office, staff, a real operation. A flexi-desk is not fatal but must be addressed rather than hoped past.
Structure
Every layer between you and the operating company is a question. Each one needs a commercial answer.

Questions

The digital banks — Wio and Zand — and Mashreq's SME proposition are generally the quickest to onboard a newly formed company. RAKBANK has a long reputation for pragmatism with small businesses. Ease of onboarding is not the same as suitability: a trade finance business needs a bank that does trade finance.

Typically two to six weeks from a complete application. Files that generate follow-up questions and are answered slowly can run considerably longer. The variable is rarely the bank's speed — it is how quickly and completely the applicant responds.

Rarely. Nearly every UAE bank requires the authorised signatory in person. Anything advertised as fully remote is usually an electronic money institution or payment account rather than a bank account, which may be fine but is a different product.

Most often because the file does not let a compliance officer write a defensible sentence about what the business does and where its money comes from. The recurring causes are activity mismatch against the licence, no demonstrable substance, undocumented source of wealth, high-risk counterparty geography, and structural complexity without a commercial reason.

Most banks apply an average minimum balance with a fee if you fall below it, and the level varies widely by bank and by account type. Digital banks are generally the lowest. Confirm the current figure with the bank — published numbers date quickly.
