Visas & immigration
Quota follows floor space, not ambition.
The single most expensive mistake in UAE setup is buying the cheapest licence package and discovering it caps you at two people. Here is how residence actually works.
The arithmetic
How many people can this company sponsor?
Every UAE residence visa is sponsored by an entity, and every entity has a ceiling. That ceiling is not negotiable and it is not related to your revenue, your headcount plan or your intentions. It is a function of the space you lease.
A flexi-desk — a shared workstation you have the right to use, not an office — typically supports somewhere between one and six visas depending on the zone. A private office is calculated per square metre, with most authorities working to roughly nine square metres per visa. Warehousing and industrial land run on their own formulas and go much higher.
The process
One trip. Three to five days.
Entry permit
Issued electronically against the company's immigration file before you travel. It allows entry for the purpose of completing residence, and it has an expiry — arrive inside it.
3–7 days, remoteStatus change or entry
If you are already in the country on a visit visa, your status is changed in place. If not, you enter on the permit. Either way the clock starts here.
1 dayMedical and biometrics
A blood test and chest X-ray at an approved centre, then fingerprints and photograph for the Emirates ID. Both require you in person and cannot be delegated. Express options exist and are worth taking.
1–2 daysVisa stamping and Emirates ID
The residence visa is issued against your passport record and the Emirates ID is produced and delivered. The ID is the document that actually matters day to day — banks, telecoms, landlords and clinics all want it, not the visa.
3–7 daysDependants
Once you are resident and have an Emirates ID, a salary certificate and a tenancy contract, you can sponsor a spouse and children. Sons are sponsorable to a set age; daughters until they marry. Parents are possible but the income and insurance requirements are higher.
2–4 weeks after your own
Ten years
The Golden Visa, minus the marketing.
A ten-year renewable residence that is not tied to an employer, and does not lapse if you leave the country for six months the way a standard visa does. That last point is the real benefit and it is the one least often mentioned.
The main routes are property investment at or above a set threshold, company ownership meeting capital or turnover conditions, specialist talent nominated by a competent authority, and exceptional students and researchers. Thresholds and evidentiary requirements move, and the published criteria are less precise than the process actually is.
Visas & immigration
Every route to a UAE residence.
Golden Visa by category, the Green Visa, employment and investor routes, sponsoring your family, and the processes nobody explains until you are already in the queue.
The Golden Visa, by route
Nine ways in, testing completely different facts. The property route is the most marketed and the talent routes are the most under-used — several of them cost nothing and require no investment at all.
The Green Visa and self-sponsorship
Five years, no employer, and a much lower bar than the Golden Visa. A very large number of people in Dubai already meet the skilled-employee conditions and are on a two-year employer visa because nobody told them.
Other residence routes
Remote work, retirement, job exploration, study, environmental contribution, company ownership and household staff — each with its own conditions and its own restrictions on what you may then do.
Sponsoring your family
Salary thresholds, attested certificates and the age limits that arrive faster than families plan for. Attestation is what determines the timeline in almost every case, and it happens in another country.
The process itself
The mechanics behind every route above — what each stage does, what it costs, and the three ways an immigration record gets blocked.
Employment & HR
Employing people here.
Work permits, contracts, probation, leave, gratuity, WPS, Emiratisation, unemployment insurance and termination — the obligations that apply whatever the contract says.
Hiring
A fixed sequence with quota at the front of it, and a job title on the permit that quietly decides what the employee can do with their immigration status years later.
Pay, leave and benefits
Statutory entitlements apply whatever the contract says. Gratuity accrues from the first year and most small companies have never provided for it; untaken leave is paid out on exit whether or not anyone tracked it.
Ending employment
The 2021 reforms changed this substantially — resignation no longer forfeits gratuity and labour bans apply far more narrowly. A great deal of advice still in circulation describes the old law.
Staying compliant
Four systems on four calendars, penalties levied per worker, and disputes decided by whoever kept the documents during the employment rather than after it.
