Emirates ID
Definition
What it means.
The national identity card issued to citizens and residents. In day-to-day terms it matters more than the visa itself: banks, telecoms operators, landlords, clinics and government services all ask for the Emirates ID rather than the passport stamp.
Where it comes up
The Emirates ID is the document that actually matters day to day. Banks, telecoms operators, landlords, clinics and government services ask for it rather than for the passport or the visa stamp.
What it costs
A government fee scaled by the visa duration, plus the medical test. Express processing costs more and is usually worth it.
Who it applies to
Every UAE citizen and resident. It expires with the residence visa and renews alongside it.
How it actually goes
- Enter on the permitThe entry permit is issued first; the Emirates ID process begins after arrival, or after status change for those already in the country.
- Complete the medicalA fitness test at an approved centre. Results feed directly into the visa file.
- Give biometricsFingerprints and photograph at an ICP service centre or approved typing centre.
- Collect the cardDelivered by post or collected. Its validity matches the residence visa.
Nothing meaningful happens without it. Bank accounts, telecom lines, tenancy registration, school enrolment and government portals all key off the Emirates ID number, and a card in processing is not the same as a card in hand.
In short
- Issued after medical and biometrics
- Required for banking, tenancy and most services
- Expires with the residence visa
