Practical guide
Wage Protection System
The Wage Protection System requires employers to pay salaries through approved channels so that payments are recorded electronically. Non-compliance blocks new work permits and can suspend a company's ability to hire at all.
In practice
WPS registration in the UAE
What it is for
WPS exists so that the ministry can see that people were actually paid, on time and in full. It was introduced to address wage disputes and unpaid salaries, and it works by making the payment itself the evidence.
Who it applies to
Mainland employers registered with MOHRE, and an increasing number of free zones which operate their own equivalent systems. If you employ anyone on the mainland, you are in it — there is no small-employer exemption.
- Administered by
- MOHRE, through approved banks and exchange houses
- Frequency
- Monthly, within the prescribed window after salary due date
- Coverage
- All mainland employees; many free zones run equivalents
- Non-compliance
- Blocks new work permits; escalating penalties; possible file suspension
- Salary file
- A prescribed electronic format submitted through your agent bank
- Partial payment
- Paying less than the contracted salary is itself a breach
The sequence
How it runs.
Register the company with an agent
An approved bank or exchange house that processes WPS files.
Enrol employees
Each employee needs an account with a participating institution and their labour card details on file.
Generate the salary file
In the prescribed format, matching contracted salaries exactly.
Transmit within the window
Late transmission is treated as non-payment.
Reconcile monthly
Mismatches between the contract and the transfer are what trigger flags.
Questions
The Wage Protection System — a federal electronic system requiring employers to pay salaries through approved banks and exchange houses so payments are recorded. It is administered by MOHRE for mainland employers, with many free zones running equivalents.
New work permits are blocked, penalties accrue, and in serious cases the company's labour file can be suspended entirely — meaning no hiring, no visa renewals and no transfers.
Many free zones operate their own equivalent wage protection requirements. Check with your zone — the absence of MOHRE registration does not mean the absence of an obligation.
One question
Where are you in this?
Then this is the cheap moment to get it right. Structure, jurisdiction and activity codes are the decisions that are expensive to reverse once a bank account and six visas hang off them.
