Applying for and renewing an Emirates ID

The number that everything else keys off — banking, tenancy, telecoms, schools and every government portal. A card in processing is not the same as a card in hand, and the gap causes more trouble than the application does.

What it is

Who this is actually for.

The Emirates ID is issued by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship and is the identity document the entire system runs on. Application follows the entry permit and the medical fitness test: biometrics — fingerprints and photograph — are captured at an ICP service centre or an approved typing centre, and the card is produced and delivered. Its validity matches the residence visa, so a two-year residence carries a two-year card and a ten-year Golden Visa carries a ten-year one. Renewal is due when the residence renews, with a window after expiry before fines accrue.

What causes practical difficulty is the interval between application and card. The Emirates ID number is generated at application and can be used for some purposes immediately, but many counterparties — banks in particular, and landlords, and schools — want to see the physical card or a verified digital credential before they will act. New arrivals therefore hit a fortnight in which they are lawfully resident, have a number, and still cannot open the account that the salary needs to be paid into. The sequence is manageable if you know it is coming: start the corporate or personal account conversation early, and expect the card rather than the number to be the gating item.

The sequence

How it runs, in order.

  1. Complete the entry permit and medical firstThe Emirates ID application sits inside the residence process rather than beside it.
  2. Attend for biometricsFingerprints and photograph. Appointments at ICP centres are quicker than walk-ins at typing centres.
  3. Track the applicationStatus is visible through ICP's channels; the number exists before the card does.
  4. Collect or receive the cardBy post or collection depending on the emirate and the channel used.
  5. Diarise renewal with the visaThey run together, and a lapsed card blocks transactions that the visa alone would permit.
The mistake people make. Planning the first month around the visa date rather than the card date. People arrive, get residence stamped, and find the bank will not open an account, the landlord will not register the Ejari and the school will not confirm the place — all waiting on a card that is two weeks behind.

Typically one to two weeks after biometrics, though it varies by emirate and by season. The number is issued earlier than the card.

There is a window to renew before fines accrue daily. An expired card blocks most government and banking transactions immediately.

Most banks want the card or a verified digital identity. Some will begin the process on the number and the residence stamp.

Yes, and it is routinely requested — for police checks, hospital admission, telecom contracts and property transactions.
