Golden Visa for scientists and researchers

Researchers with a doctorate and a publication record can hold a ten-year residence independent of any university post — which changes what a UAE research career can look like.

What it is

Who this is actually for.

The scientist and researcher limb sits inside the exceptional talent category and is assessed on academic standing rather than on money. What is looked for is a doctorate from an accredited institution, a demonstrable research record, and endorsement — most commonly from the Emirates Scientists Council, a UAE university, or the ministry responsible for the relevant field. Citation record, grant history, patents and editorial positions all support the case. Priority goes to fields the state has identified as strategic — engineering, computing, life sciences, epidemiology and artificial intelligence among them — though a strong record outside those fields is assessed on its merits. The underlying policy is straightforward: the UAE is buying research capacity, and the visa is the instrument through which it does so.

For a working researcher the practical significance is portability. Academic residence has traditionally been tied to the institution that employs you, which makes moving between a university, a research institute and a spin-out company an immigration event each time. A ten-year self-sponsored residence decouples the career from the employer, which is precisely what makes commercialising research feasible — you can hold a post, consult, and found a company off the back of your own work without three separate visa processes. It also lets a spouse work under their own permit rather than under a dependency that ends when your contract does.

The university's HR route produces a two-year employment visa, because that is the process it knows.

The sequence

How it runs, in order.

  1. Confirm the institution's accreditationA doctorate from an institution the UAE does not recognise will not carry the application, and this is worth checking before assembling anything else.
  2. Attest the doctorateIn the issuing country, through the current attestation route for that state. For older degrees this is the longest single step.
  3. Build the research dossierPublications, citation metrics, funded grants, patents, peer review and editorial roles. Present it as a case, not a CV.
  4. Secure the endorsementFrom the council, a university, or the ministry covering your field.
  5. Apply, then medical and Emirates IDThe residence is not tied to a post, so a subsequent change of institution is an employment matter rather than an immigration one.
The mistake people make. Letting the university handle it as though it were an employment visa. Institutions are set up to sponsor staff, and their HR route produces a two-year employment residence because that is the process they know. The ten-year self-sponsored route is a different application, and nobody in the HR department is going to suggest it.

Questions

No. The residence is not tied to a post, though an endorsement from a UAE university is one of the more straightforward ways to obtain one.

It must be from an accredited institution, and the degree must be attested. The field matters as much as the country.

The residence does not itself license commercial activity — you would still need a trade licence — but it removes the immigration obstacle to doing so.

Priority fields clear the assessment most easily but are not the whole of it. A strong record with a credible endorsement is assessed on its merits.
