When a son turns 18 — and 25
Eighteen brings a medical test and an Emirates ID. Twenty-five ends the dependency altogether. Both are predictable and both are routinely handled as emergencies.

Two thresholds matter for a sponsored son. At eighteen he is no longer treated as a child for immigration purposes: the residence can continue under the parent's sponsorship, but he must now complete the medical fitness test and hold an Emirates ID in his own right, and renewals become an adult process. At twenty-five the dependency ends entirely. There is no discretionary extension for a son who is simply still living at home, and the residence must be replaced rather than renewed.
The replacement options are all workable and all need lead time. A son enrolled at a UAE university can hold a student residence, sponsored by the institution or in defined cases still by the parent. A son who is employed moves onto his employer's work permit. A son earning AED 15,000 a month with a degree qualifies for the five-year Green Visa in his own right, which is by far the best outcome and the one nobody suggests. A son who qualified as an outstanding graduate may already be eligible for a ten-year Golden Visa. What does not work is doing nothing, because the residence expires on a known date and overstay fines accrue daily from the day after.
