Changing visa status without leaving the country
The in-country status change replaced the visa run. It saves a flight and about a week, it is not available in every case, and knowing which cases is worth real money.

Status change is the process by which someone already inside the UAE moves from one immigration status to another — visit visa to residence, employment visa to investor visa, student to employment — without exiting and re-entering. It replaced the visa run, in which a new arrival flew to a neighbouring country and came back the same day on a fresh entry stamp, a practice that was both expensive and slightly ridiculous. The change is processed through the emirate's residency directorate or ICP, carries a fee, and is completed alongside the medical and Emirates ID steps.
It is not universally available and the exceptions are where the money is lost. Certain nationalities, certain visa types and certain prior immigration history — an overstay, a cancelled visa with an outstanding issue, an absconding report — can require an exit and re-entry regardless. The practical consequence is that this should be confirmed before a family arrives on visit visas intending to convert, rather than discovered afterwards. Where it is available it is almost always the right choice: it saves flights, saves roughly a week, and avoids the risk of a re-entry being refused at the border for a reason nobody anticipated.
