Wage Protection System (WPS)
Definition
What it means.
A federal electronic system requiring employers to pay salaries through approved channels so that payments are recorded. Non-compliance blocks new work permits and can suspend a company's ability to hire.
Where it comes up
The Wage Protection System exists so the ministry can see that people were actually paid, on time and in full. It works by making the payment itself the evidence, transmitted through an approved bank or exchange house.
What it costs
Transaction fees through your agent bank. The real cost is non-compliance, which blocks new work permits and can suspend hiring entirely.
Who it applies to
Mainland employers, and many free zones which run equivalent systems. There is no small-employer exemption.
How it actually goes
- Bank with a WPS participantThe corporate account has to sit with a bank or exchange house connected to the system.
- Register with an approved agentThe agent formats and transmits the monthly salary information file.
- Pay on cycleSalaries transfer through WPS each month, matched against the registered contracts.
- Watch the compliance flagLate or short payment blocks new work permits, which stops hiring before anyone notices the underlying problem.
WPS compares what you paid against what the registered contract says. Paying part of the salary outside the system — a cash allowance, a bonus routed elsewhere — reads as underpayment and triggers the block.
In short
- Mandatory for mainland employers and many free zones
- Salaries paid through approved agents or banks
- Non-compliance blocks work permit issuance
