The UAE job exploration entry permit

A short entry permit that lets you look for work without a sponsor and without a tourist visa run. It is graded by skill level and by university ranking, which surprises people.

What it is

Who this is actually for.

The job exploration entry permit lets someone enter the UAE specifically to look for work, without a sponsor and without the fiction of arriving as a tourist. It is issued for sixty, ninety or one hundred and twenty days, and eligibility rests on falling within MOHRE skill levels one to three, or on being a recent graduate of a university ranked within the top institutions on the recognised list. It does not permit work — it permits presence while you find it — and it converts to an employment residence without leaving the country once an offer is signed.

The practical value is the conversion. The traditional route into a UAE job for someone abroad was to arrive on a tourist visa, interview, accept, and then leave the country and re-enter on an employment permit — an expensive and faintly absurd sequence that everyone tolerated because there was no alternative. The job exploration permit removes the exit. It also removes the awkwardness of interviewing while technically a tourist, which matters more than it sounds when an employer's HR department is deciding how quickly they can put you on a permit.

The sequence

How it runs, in order.

  1. Confirm your skill classification or universityLevels one to three cover managerial, professional and technical work. Graduates rely on the institution's ranking instead.
  2. Choose the duration honestlyA sixty-day permit costs less and expires faster. Hiring cycles here run longer than candidates expect.
  3. Apply through ICP before travellingWith the qualification, passport and evidence of classification.
  4. Interview and secure the offerNothing about the permit lets you start work before the permit is issued.
  5. Convert to employment residenceThe employer files the work permit and the status changes without a flight.
The mistake people make. Treating it as a work permit. It authorises presence, not employment, and starting on an informal basis while the paperwork catches up creates an immigration problem for you and a MOHRE problem for the employer. Both are avoidable by waiting the two weeks.

Questions

No. It permits you to be in the country looking for work. Employment begins when the work permit is issued.

Yes — that is the main advantage over arriving as a tourist. The status change is done in-country.

It can be reapplied for, but overstaying it accrues daily fines and complicates the next application. Leave or extend before expiry.

The graduate limb rests on a recognised ranking list. Graduates outside it would need to qualify on skill classification instead.
