Sponsoring your own UAE residence
Three routes let you hold a residence nobody else controls: the Golden Visa, the Green Visa and the remote work permit. They suit completely different people and are routinely confused with one another.
What it is
Who this is actually for.
Self-sponsorship means the residence belongs to you rather than to an employer or a free zone. Three instruments achieve it. The Golden Visa runs five or ten years and is earned through an asset, an endorsement or a nomination. The Green Visa runs five years and is earned through employment at a salary threshold, self-employment at an income threshold, or a shareholding. The remote work permit runs one year and rests on being employed by a company outside the UAE. They are not tiers of the same thing — they test entirely different facts, and the right one is decided by what you can evidence rather than by what you would prefer.
The reason this matters is that self-sponsorship is usually pursued at the wrong moment. People start looking when their employment is ending, which is the point at which the Green Visa's employment limb has just closed, the income trail for the freelance limb was never built, and the Golden Visa endorsement takes longer than the grace period allows. Every one of these routes is easier to secure while you still have the thing it tests — the job, the income history, the current professional licence, the live relationship with a university. Treated as insurance rather than as a rescue, all three are straightforward.

How long it takes
The sequence
How it runs, in order.
- Work out what you can currently evidenceA salary certificate, two years of freelance income, a title deed, a professional licence, a doctorate. The evidence you already hold decides the route.
- Apply while the evidence is liveEvery route tests something that expires: employment, income history, a current licence, an institutional relationship.
- Attest qualifications earlyDegrees and professional certificates are needed by most routes and take the longest, because attestation happens in the issuing country.
- Choose the route, not the termA five-year Green Visa you qualify for beats a ten-year Golden Visa you do not.
- Add the family afterwardsAll three permit family sponsorship once your own residence is issued.

For a mid-career professional earning AED 15,000 or more with a degree, the Green Visa skilled employee route, by a distance. It is also the least applied for.
In most cases yes, through a status change. The old visa is cancelled and the new one issued in sequence.
No. Tax residence is a separate test with its own certificate, resting on days of presence and ties rather than on holding a visa.
Yes. The residence and the right to work are administered separately; you still need the appropriate work permit for the role.
One question
Who is going to sponsor this residence?
Then most of this is out of your hands and that is usually fine — the employer holds the quota, files the permit and carries the cost. What is worth checking before you sign is the job title going on the permit, because it decides your skill classification, and that in turn decides whether you can sponsor a family later.
How the employment route runsOr just ask usThen the visa and the company are one decision. Quota comes from the licence and the premises, so a package chosen on price can quietly cap you at one or two visas — which is discovered at the point you want to bring your spouse or your first hire.
Compare the 40 authoritiesOr just ask usThen you are looking at the Golden Visa, the Green Visa, or the remote work permit, and they are not interchangeable. The Green Visa needs a freelance permit and an income history; the Golden Visa needs an asset, an endorsement or a nomination; the remote work permit needs a foreign employer and lasts a year.
