Every applicant for a UAE residence aged eighteen or over completes a medical fitness test at a centre approved by the health authority in that emirate. It consists of a blood sample and a chest X-ray, screening principally for communicable diseases — HIV, hepatitis B and C in certain categories, tuberculosis and, for some job categories, additional screening. Results feed directly into the immigration file rather than to you, and standard processing returns them in two to three working days, with same-day and next-day options available at higher cost.
It is worth being direct about the consequence, because the official material is not. A positive result for certain communicable diseases renders an applicant medically unfit for residence, and the application ends. This is not a matter of appeal in the ordinary case, and it applies equally to a first-time applicant and to somebody who has lived here for fifteen years and is renewing. Anyone with a known condition in the screened categories should take advice before relocating a family, signing a lease or accepting a role — not after booking the test. Tuberculosis findings are handled differently, and an inactive or treated finding may permit residence under a health-supervision arrangement.
